Does solar energy really work?
Yes it does! Renewable energy technologies are developing fast and solar thermal collectors are very efficient at harnessing the sun's energy to heat domestic hot water. In fact, solar thermal water heating is the most accessible and reliable form of renewable (microgeneration) energy available today.
The panels look fragile, will they last long?
The panels are incredibly robust and strong. Many panels have a life expectancy of over 35 years.
Do the solar panels work in the British climate?
Solar thermal panels are suitable to the British climate, even on cloudy days or when it is raining there is radiation for the collectors to absorb and convert into energy.
How much does it cost and what is the pay back period?
Cost is dependent on the size of the installation but will range between £3,000 and £5,000 for the average property. Research by Genersys suggests that the payback period for a conventional three bedroom house with a south facing roof is around 8 years. However, with energy prices on the increase this period is shortening.
Can I use the sun's energy to heat my swimming pool?
Solar pool heating is an excellent application of solar thermal energy due to the low temperatures required.
Will I still need a boiler?
A boiler is still required to 'top-up' your hot water when the solar thermal panels have not absorbed enough energy to provide all your hot water needs. However, the workload of your boiler will be reduced which will increase its life expectancy.
Can I keep my existing boiler?
In most cases existing boilers are suitable to solar thermal installations. However, incorporating a new high efficiency A-rated condensing boiler as part of the installation will really maximise the efficiency of your water heating system.
Can I have an unvented hot water cylinder?
It is possible to have a compatible unvented hot water cylinder and we can install one of these as part of the solar thermal system. Benefits of an unvented hot water cylinder is that they are more energy efficient and will provide fast running taps and powerful high pressure showers.
What maintenance will I have to do on my solar panels?
Solar panels do not require any maintenance by the owner. However, we recommend the panels are serviced once every five years to ensure they are working efficiently.
Are there grants or funding available?
There are a variety of renewable energy grants and initiatives available to both homeowners and businesses to help towards the installation costs of solar thermal systems.
