Most homes and existing central heating systems are suitable for a solar thermal hot water installation.
Green Choice Heating will visit your property to conduct a full survey to ensure your property will substantially benefit from solar thermal water heating and advise you accordingly.
We provide a bespoke full simulation report to estimate performance of your proposed system as part of our quotation process before you decide to commit to the works.
But here are a few factors for you to consider:
Roof Type
The panels can be fitted to almost any roof pitch and construction.
For optimum efficiency the roof should be facing a southerly direction, but east / west systems are possible. The panels benefit most from full exposure to the sun so should not be overshadowed by tall buildings, chimneys or overhanging trees.
Boiler Type
Solar thermal heating systems still require a boiler to 'top-up' the hot water when required.
Solar thermal can be designed to be compatible with all types of existing central heating systems.
However, if you were to incorporate a new high efficiency A-rated condensing boiler as part of the solar thermal installation it will ensure that the system will work at optimum efficiency.
Cylinder Type
Solar thermal collectors will require a new specialised cylinder. Either a twin coil hot water cylinder, thermal store or buffer vessel.
There are unvented hot water cylinders available which are compatible with solar thermal systems. Benefits of an unvented hot water cylinder is that they are more energy efficient and will provide fast running taps and powerful high pressure showers.
Planning Permission for Solar Panels
Since April 2008 the Government relaxed planning laws for domestic properties and as a result it is not always necessary to apply for planning permission from your local authority council for a solar thermal installation.
We recommend you always contact your local authority planning department to check their policy regarding the installation of solar panels prior to work commencing.
